Japanese Garden Hermann Park

May 2017 marked the 25 th anniversary of the japanese garden a popular destination in hermann park.
Japanese garden hermann park. Over the years the garden had begun to settle into a texas style garden and was at risk of losing its japanese nature. The japanese garden in hermann park is operated by the city of houston parks and recreation department and was created by the efforts of american and japanese businesses with grants from many foundations and individuals. The japanese garden at the hermann park is one that has been there for a long time and to this date still is what i considered to be a small hidden gem nestled into the otherwise area wide city park.
Large for a japanese garden in us it is quite extensive with a nice water work pond. Like most stroll gardens this five acre oasis is designed around a sequence of landscape elements which come together to create a work of living art. The city of houston donated the land and helped with the construction.
The trees were maintained so it is sort of a pine set aside which creates a nice atmosphere. Improvements to the garden began in 2007 with annual direction by the design and landscape team from japan and will continue through the anniversary year. It is worth the walk there are two entrances south and north side the latter being closer to the science museum.
